Puppy Buying Guide

Basset Hound PuppyBuying a Basset Hound puppy is easy if you know what you are looking for and you can generally find one to suit your family. If you are purchasing a Basset for the first time, it is a good idea to check them out before you buy.

Many dog owners do not check on the breed before the purchase it and this gets them into trouble. You should know that a Basset can have many health problems if they are not purchased through a good breeder.

There are several ways to purchase a Basset and all have their good points and bad. Primarily, you will have several ways to buy a Basset.

1. At a pet store – pet stores are the worst place to buy Bassets because they are often from places that are called puppy mills. They do not take care of the animals as well as most breeders do because they are only breeding them to sell.

2. The dog pound — although pound puppies are cute, and you can probably find a Basset, there is no way to tell their lineage. This can cause problems later.

3. Breeders — although you might think a breeder is expensive, they are the best choice if you want to make sure that your dog is healthy and you want to know their heritage.

4. Rescue program — many rescue programs have older dogs and they may or may not have the papers telling you more about the dog.

Once you decide where to go, it’s time to check out the place. If you are looking for a basset puppy, here are some things to remember:

Most puppies aren’t shy — if you find a shy puppy there may be something wrong with them or they may become aggressive later. Wait for the puppies that come to you.

Play with the other dogs — when you go to a breeder you have the privilege of also meeting the parents of your puppy (if it is a good breeder). Spending a little time with them can tell you what to expect out of the puppy.

Watch the puppy with other puppies — is the puppy getting along or are they terrorizing the others? You want to pick a puppy that is even tempered and playful.

Check the puppy all over — check to make sure that a Basset puppy’s eyes and ears are clear of debris. This will tell you how well the breeder takes care of them and will alert you to any health problems.

These are just a few tips that will help you buy a basset hound puppy that suits you and your family’s needs. You can find out more by talking to a veterinarian or checking online for Basset Hound information.
