About Basset Hounds

About Basset HoundBasset Hounds are a lovable breed of dog, that is bred to hunt rabbits. They are part of the scent hounds and they are the ones that are short with long floppy ears. Their sense of smell is phenomenal and the only other dog that has a keener sense of smell is the Bloodhound.

Most Basset Hounds weigh between 50 and 65 pounds and are 12-15 inches in height. The lifespan is about 10 to 12 years. They also have a short coat that sheds a lot because it is hard and shiny. You will also notice that their teeth are very sharp — they have been known to cut through your average hose in the garden.

Although they may not seem like a powerful dog their legs and body are very solid and muscular. If you want to show your dog a dog show there are many acceptable colors. Most Bassets will be tricolored tan, white and brown, red and white, a honey color and white or lemon and white.

Bassets are lovable and friendly and they enjoy meeting people. They are a good dog for children and families. This can be a good trait and a difficult one at the same time. Because they are so friendly and like people most owners find that if they are going to be gone a lot, the Basset will need another pet in the house.

These dogs enjoy exercise so it is a good idea to take them out and use their natural talents for what you do with them in exercise. As an example, they can run field trials and they like tracking exercises.

When you are attempting to train your Basset the earlier you start training the better. Also, it may be a good idea to figure out something other than food as a reward because they have a tendency to take the food, obey and then forget about it once the food is gone.

When you hear your Basset Hound howl or bark, think of them as an early alert system. They will make this noise if they want something or think something is out of the ordinary. For instance, you might have this behavior when they feel a stranger coming or when they feel a storm. They also have a whine that they use when they are outrageously begging for food.

Keep in mind that Bassets were bred to hunt and if they are not hunting they will lose those skills. If you are someone who wants to help them keep those skills, whether you are a hunter or not, you can check with the Basset Hound Club of America or the American Hunting Basset Association. Both of these organizations promote the hunting of rabbits with these hounds.

Generally Basset Hounds are healthy but you have to watch for certain things because of their height and stature. All of these can be helped if you take the dog to the vet periodically.
